On the average, a pregnant woman will gain about 6kg in the second trimester and 12kg all through the pregnancy. The implication of this is that about half the weight gain experienced during pregnancy occurs in the second trimester. Some women experience excessive weight gain during this period that they find it difficult to drop the weight gain even after delivery. Out of the total weight gain during the second trimester, only about 1kg goes to the baby. Some will go into the development of the uterus and the breast while the others will be distributed as body fluid. The remaining excess will be all yours after delivery. A balanced diet with reasonable proportion of the essential nutrient is more relevant than excess binging on diets that favors your appetite. Carbohydrate and fat rich foods are notorious for causing excess weight gain. Excess weight gain is a risk factor for preeclampsia (hypertension and protein in the urine in pregnancy) and diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. Excess weight gain also makes you tired and slow.
