This is definitely a myth as we have seen that menstruation which is the shedding of the lining of the womb occurs in response to failure of fertilization of an egg that was released by the ovary and thus the lining of the womb (endometrium) “weeps” in response to that failed fertilization.

In pregnancy, fertilization of the egg has taken place and there is release of the hormone progesterone by the corpus luteum and this prevents the shedding of the lining of the womb and thus there should be no menstruation. It is important to mention that women can bleed for some other reasons while pregnant. Any woman who bleeds from her vagina while pregnant should go to her care giver for evaluation because she may be having threatened miscarriage or even on ectopic pregnancy. It is puzzling to state that a very small minority of women have reported regular bleeds from an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy all through the pregnancy duration and they claim they are menstruating. There is no scientific basis to explain this claim anyway; it may be other causes of bleeding in pregnancy.

In women with history of recurrent miscarriage some gynaecologist give exogenous progestogens to help prevent reoccurrence of miscarriage due to luteal phase deficiency in this group of women.Research evidence does not show any real benefit in the use of exogenous progestogens in the management of recurrent miscarriage.
